Incredible's super-suit has, and which I did not notice in theaters. This is the kind of effect that looks particularly spectacular in 4K, as does the subtle metallic sheen Mr. Nobody specifically mentions this, but Bird's experience in live-action heavily informs the lighting: able to control the weather within his CG world, he stages more than one sequence at 'golden hour,' and the entire intro on a day with bright sun rays peeking out between dark clouds. Pixar movies often seem made by committee, but the overwhelming thrust of the commentary and all the behind-the-scenes featurettes is that this was Bird's vision top-to-bottom. And pay close attention to Winston Deavor's hands, which change size depending on their proximity to his face. The commentary track features animators, who frequently point out the little details you wouldn't necessarily think about, like lips needing to be asymmetrical, or bumps in the road during an interior moving vehicle scene. Bird often says he doesn't make movies specifically for children, and while one or two of the extras - specifically, an irritating rap video by teen stars Frankie and Paige, along with a making-of where they talk to Pixar employees who speak only in rhyme - are aimed at youngsters, most of this fully loaded disc is aimed at illuminating every stage of the filmmaking process. The home version, however, which is currently out on Blu-ray, 4K and VOD, is possibly the disc of the year. But the original is a really high bar, and even a decent followup (which this is) is something of a miracle, especially since writer-director Brad Bird essentially wrote himself into a corner at the end of the first one by making baby Jack-Jack a godlike deus ex machina with unlimited abilities. The story's less contained, and it retreads the same central debate about whether superheroes are a good or bad thing, with a villain who essentially posits (in convincing but cruel fashion) that powers are equivalent to Ayn Randian selfish hierarchy. And let's be honest: the sequel is not as good as the original.
